Crime Classifications and Penalties in Pennsylvania

If you are charged and convicted of a crime in Pennsylvania, the penalties for the conviction will vary depending on the classifications of the crimes as well as other factors. Serious crimes are usually referred to as felony offenses, while the least serious non-traffic crimes are referred to as summary offenses. Misdemeanors offenses fall in between those two points.

In addition, crimes are classified as first, second, or third degree offenses. First degree offenses are the most serious in each type of crime classification. In Pennsylvania, the following classification system is often used:
* F1 or first degree felony
* F2, or second degree felony
* F3 or third degree (ungraded) felony
* M1 or first degree misdemeanor
* M2 or second degree misdemeanor
* M3 or third degree (ungraded) misdemeanor
* Summary Offenses

Each one of these classes has guidelines for sentencing. These guidelines are used by the court when making a sentencing determination after a criminal conviction. Other factors may also be considered. Your lawyer should be able to further explain this to you and answer any questions that you might have.
